Last month, the Colorado Division of Insurance released a report on health insurance in the state, and it is definitely be a good read for anyone interested in how health insurance works in Colorado. There are all sorts of interesting facts included, and some may be surprising to people. For example, only a third of Coloradans are covered by a health insurance policy that is regulated by the Division of Insurance. The rest are either covered by a self-insured employer plan or a government plan, or are uninsured.

Last week’s Health Wonk Review included an excellent article by Maggie Mahar, focusing on the real statistics around cancer deaths. Her article provides a lot of detail about the actual cancer risks for various demographic groups, rather than just lumping everybody (including smokers) into one group.
Maggie notes that the most important things we can do to decrease the incidence of cancer and increase survival odds would be a serious effort to help people quit smoking (and avoid starting in the first place) and genuine access to effective cancer treatment for all Americans, regardless of economic status. The new health insurance law will add at least $115 billion more to government health care spending over the next 10 years, according to the CBO. If all additional spending called for in the legislation is approved, it would push the cost of the overhaul above $1 trillion. The added spending includes administrative costs to federal agencies carrying out the law, community health centers, and Indian health care.
“If Congress were to approve all of this new discretionary funding authorized in the health care bill, almost all of the administration’s highly touted savings would be made null and void,” said Jennifer Hing.

Doctor’s Face another Medicare Payout Cut
In March, we reported that doctors were ditching their patients because their Medicare payments had been cut by 21 percent. Now it appears that doctors could face yet another 21 percent payment cut in Medicare reimbursement on June 1. In 1997, a Medicare formula was established that said rates should be cut every year, but Congress has blocked the cut seven out of eight years.
In order to block the cut for June, Congress would need to vote within the next two weeks. (
